The five quality metrics that predict bulk consistency — and the inspection questions to ask before your first container.
Sample approval is easy — bulk consistency is the hard part. Before placing a container order, these are the quality checks that predict whether pallet 40 will match pallet 1.
Moisture level directly affects clumping speed and shelf stability. Too dry and litter becomes dusty; too damp and clumps form inside the bag. Ask your supplier for the standard moisture range per formula and the COA value of your actual production batch.
Drop-test clumps from scoop height: a quality clump survives handling without crumbling. Weak clumps mean litter passes through the scoop and the box degrades faster — the single most common consumer complaint.
Fill a scoop and let it pour in good light. Excess visible dust means fine-particle content is high — bad for cats, humans, and repeat purchases. Low-dust production is a processing discipline, not an accident.
Uniform granules flow well in packaging machines and look premium in the box. A high proportion of broken granules indicates aggressive processing or poor transport handling.
For scented litter, the fragrance should be present but subtle at opening, and still detectable at the end of the use cycle. Overpowering initial scent usually masks a fast fade.
A great sample from a factory with no inspection process is a gamble. Ask:
Practical steps buyers can take: retain the approved sample as a reference standard, request photos of the production run, and use pre-shipment inspection on first orders — the cost is trivial against a rejected container.
YoVia runs 100% pre-shipment inspection across all four formulas — tofu, bentonite, silica gel, and mixed — with COA documentation available with orders. For our full quality process, see the about page.
